I Tried AI Photography For My Newborn And This is How It Turned Out

This blog post was authored by John B., new dad

Seriously the best AI newborn photography editor out there -- no one guessed this newborn photo of my baby daughter was created by an AI baby photoshoot

One of the AI-generated photos of my newborn that we sent out to family and friends

As a tech-savvy new dad, I love exploring new gadgets and services to make life easier. From smart cribs to baby monitors, baby tracking apps to baby health AI chatbots, I’ve been trying them all. When I learned that other dads were experimenting with AI for baby photography my ears perked up. I couldn’t resist trying on my newborn. There weren’t a lot of options out there that focused on baby photos and Honeycomb was mentioned in my new dad circles, so I absolutely had to try it.

How it Went

From the start, the process was incredibly straightforward. All I had to do was upload a few photos of my daughter from my phone. The user interface was intuitive, making it easy to navigate even for those who aren't as tech-inclined. Once I uploaded my baby’s photos, I didn’t know what to expect. It felt like playing a slot machine, hoping for a jackpot but bracing for disappointment.

What I Loved

I was genuinely shocked by the results. The AI transformed a few mediocre shots of my daughter into a vast number of stunning, professional-quality images.

The photos were not only sharp and vibrant, but the AI also added beautiful props and refined lighting that looked like it was done in a high-end studio. Each image showcased a level of detail and artistic quality that far surpassed my expectations. It was like having a professional photographer at my fingertips, creating photos that were both magical and flawless.

The Flaws

While the AI-generated photos were impressive, they weren’t without flaws. Occasionally, there were weird distortions, such as extra fingers or unnatural hand positions. I tried a few more times, uploading a different set of my daughter’s “real photos” each time, and managed to improve my outputs, but they were never all perfect. I felt like some of the quality was within my control based on the photos I fed to the AI, but most of the time it felt like a slot machine.

Overall

There are definitely tradeoffs to AI technology. Loosely following the AI space I knew not to expect perfection, so I wasn’t wholly shocked by some of the weird outputs I got. But I got so many gems out of it that the few duds were absolutely worth it. The results that I loved were indeed of such high quality that my wife and I decided to print several of them. I even sent several out to family and friends and no one questioned that they weren’t “real”.
